UNA BREVE RESEÑA HISTORICA

NEW YORK, La población dominicana ha superado en numero a la puertorriqueña para convertirse en el grupo latino más numeroso en Nueva York, de acuerdo con un estudio dado a conocer hoy por el Centro de Estudios Latinoamericanos, Caribeños y Latinos de la Universidad pública de la ciudad (CUNY). De acuerdo con el estudio “Población Latina de Nueva York, 1990-2015”, basado en los datos del Censo, para el 1990 la comunidad puertorriqueña en Nueva York era de 861,000 personas, o el 49 % de todos los hispanos, cifra que se redujo a 701,000, o el 28%, para el 2015. Para ese periodo entre el 1990 y el 2015, mientras se reducía el número de boricuas, hubo un incremento que duplicó a la población dominicana, que pasó de los 349,000, o el 20 % de los latinos, a 723,000 quisqueyanos en la Gran Manzana. Los dominicanos son ahora el 29 % de la población de hispanos, pasando a ser así el mayor grupo, lugar que antes ocuparon los puertorriqueños. Los mexicanos permanecen como el tercer grupo mayoritario latino en la ciudad, con un alza, en el mismo periodo entre 1990 y 2015, que fue de 58,000 (3 % de los latinos) a 377,000 (15%). Según el estudio, realizado por el profesor Laird Bergad, director del Centro de Estudios Latinoamericanos, Caribeños y Latinos, les siguen los ecuatorianos, que pasaron de 85.000 a 223,000 y los colombianos, con un alza que fue de 92,000 a 102,000, todos en el mismo periodo de tiempo. Indica además que para el 2015, más del 32 % de los hispanos vivían en El Bronx mientras que el 21 % estaba radicado en Queens, el 21 % en Brooklyn, 17 % en Manhattan y sólo un 4 % en Staten Island.

Los datos revelan además que para el 2015, el 38 % de los puertorriqueños en la ciudad estaban en El Bronx, mientras que el 46 % de los dominicanos habían convertido este condado en su hogar, que por muchos años había sido el Alto Manhattan, superando en numero poblacional también así a los boricuas. El 56 % de los ecuatorianos y el 70 % de los colombianos están en Queens, concentrando tambien al 21 % de los mexicanos, quienes además tienen presencia en Brooklyn y Manhattan.

 

Los dominicanos han sido el grupo más grande que ha llegado a Nueva York después del 1970 y son los únicos que no han experimentado un declive en la década de 2000 al 2009. El estudio revela además que el 77 % de los latinos, que eran el 29.4% de la población de la ciudad para el 2015, son ciudadanos por nacimiento o naturalización.
